How to tame hummingbirds!
Have you ever been absolutely fascinated by these small and amazing birds? Have you ever wanted to tame them? Well, I have been fascinated by them and I have also tamed them!
The story behind the taming
Last summer, (summer 2012) I begged my parents to buy me a hummingbird feeder. If you didn't already know, I love animals! Especially hummingbirds.
When the hummingbirds finally came, I would always stare out the window and watch them buzz by to take a sip of the nectar. I thought it was the coolest thing ever! I went over to my computer to look up more about hummingbirds. I searched YouTube and came across a video that looked interesting- hand feeding hummingbirds!

I went over to my computer to look up more about hummingbirds. I searched YouTube and came across a video that looked interesting- hand feeding hummingbirds!
This was the video I saw-
After I saw that video, all I wanted to do was tame the hummingbirds and hold them and love them forever, but I didn't exactly know how to do that.
When I was done dreaming about how much I wanted to hold them and love them forever, I threw on a red shirt and red hat and ran outside with a camera. I got some pretty cool footage of the hummers, but I still wanted to tame them. I ran into the house again and got a lid from a small container. Next, I filled it with nectar. I remembered what the video said- after about 10 minutes of holding completely still... this happened. But it didn't. The next day too, or the next. I watched that video over and over again, still, nothing. I watched other videos too. Nothing! I didn't give up, I couldn't! It was my next new dream, I couldn't just let it slip away!
I stood out there for hours in the blazing hot sun. Nothing. I repeated this every day. Weeks, months had passed. That was all I wanted to do. Summer was slipping by, I was running out of time and out of thoughts. I was about to give up.
School was in a few weeks. My first year of middle school. One day, when my feeders needed to be changed, I walked outside to bring them in. The little one was completely empty, but the big one had a small amount left. We were out of the powder that you mix in water for nectar, so I went in the house to get sugar. My mom didn't want me to use the sugar because we use that one for cooking. So I went back outside to hang the empty feeders up again. When I was almost about to put them up, a female black-chinned hummingbird flew up to me. I froze, I was afraid I would scare her away. She hovered in mid air for a second, staring at me. Then she dove down and landed on the big feeder that I was holding. The one with the small amount of nectar in it. She sat there and stared at me. She would drink the nectar then stare at me again. She was very calm, like she was enjoying spending time with a human. She sat on the feeder for about a minute and a half. When she was full, she flew away. It was sad to find that the camera was still around my neck, but it was ok because I would never forget that moment when my dream came true.
After that happened, I ran to my friend's house and told him what happened. He was really happy for me. Since he had stuff to finish, he couldn't tame another hummer with me, so I promised that I would take a video for him.
I got out a red camping chair and put the big feeder on my lap. The hummingbirds got interested. They got closer and closer. Then, one hummingbird sat on the feeder on my lap. It was there for about thirty seconds. It might have even been the same black-chinned hummingbird, but I wasn't sure. I got the whole thing on video, when I showed my friend, he loved it!
After that day, I suddenly realized that all this time I had been gaining their trust. I had created a bond. My dream had finally come true!
For the next few weeks left of summer, I introduced my friends to the hummingbirds. We would stand by the feeder and they would come and sing to us. Whenever I walked outside, the hummingbirds would fly around me as if to say, "hello friend!". That was the BEST summer ever!

Thoughts of hummingbirds-
If you would like me to post your own thought, please post it in the questions and comments section.
I will not post your name!
-Hummingbirds are one of the most amazing and wonderful miricles on this earth!
-I think they are cute:)
-Hummers are the only birds that can hover. I think that's amazing. Also, I love how fast their wings flap and the sound it makes.
-A thought by the opposer, the creator of this website is a dear friend of mine and I always enjoy seeing her so excited about hummingbirds. She's always sending me her videos and telling me cool facts. All three of my grandparents have hummingbird feeders at their homes and it's always fun to see the birds come.
-Hummingbirds are cool
